i’ve worked with a lot of universities that use the “consent is sexy” motto, and i get why they do it (it’s a marketing thing). but i do think it downplays the absolute necessity of consent. consent isn’t important because it makes things sexier. it’s important because it prevents rape.
YES. EXACTLY. THANK YOU.
Every time I see an *Activist Cause* is Sexy slogan being used this ^^ is always the response I have toward it. “Environmentalism is Sexy.” Yeah, maybe…but it’s also the only hope the human race has for survival. "Reading is Sexy." Okay, but shouldn’t you do that for loads of other reasons? “Peace is Sexy.” I guess? But…like…”not sexy” are not the words I would choose to describe war. Gruesome and tragic are a couple that come to mind, though. Why do we need things to be “sexy” in order to encourage people to do them? Not only does the “Consent is Sexy” campaign dilute the severe necessity of consent during sexual interractions, it also says something about the way in which we approach social causes. We should not be concerned about “sexy” and "cool" and "trendy" and whatever else when it comes to matters that involve concepts such as “basic human decency” or simply just….not raping people. These words are heavily dependent on social constructs and are fleeting at best. You shouldn’t not engage in rape because it will make you “sexy.” You should not engage in rape…because it’s rape. That’s it. That’s all. That’s enough. Sexy or not…consent is mandatory.
sexy is just not appropriate for any cause, in fact it’s stupid.
